What is Refrigerant?

A/C Repair in Bucks County

You may have heard of refrigerant, but you don’t know what it does or how it helps your A/C unit function. Our professional team at Angel HVAC breaks down what you need to know about refrigerant and how it is used for A/C repair in Bucks County.

What is refrigerant made from?

A refrigerant is a substance, such as water, ammonia, or compressed air (CO2), that absorbs heat and carries it away from the area where heat is unwanted. “Refrigerants” are also gasses used in air conditioning, which emit less heat than the substances they replace. A refrigerant moves this heat to a different machinery region (heating system) for release into the atmosphere.

What is refrigerant used for?

The refrigerant’s role in an air conditioner or refrigerator is analogous to steam in pipes; steam carries heat out through condensing pipes’ cooling fins to preserve desired temperatures inside the home while releasing unwanted excess heat outside.

Refrigerants are also used in cryogenic systems such as liquid nitrogen and in the laboratory and industrial systems that are not a part of a large-scale refrigeration system.

Air conditioners and refrigerators use refrigerants to perform their cooling or heating functions. Most air conditioners now use Freon (R32) or Freon-like mixtures, which are made from the chemical compound dichlorodifluoromethane. More common replacements include hydrofluoroethers (HFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and ammonia.

Are there different types of refrigerant?

The two basic types of refrigerants used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems are compressors (or refrigerant flow) and expansion devices, including condensers. The compressor raises the pressure of the refrigerant, which is then heated by compression and cooled by expansion. In an air conditioner, the compressor transfers heat from a larger volume of high-temperature gas to a smaller volume of much lower-temperature gas in the cooling coil or an outdoor condenser.
